Many of the problems of light pollution are easily and cheaply mitigated using good lighting practices.

- Use the right amount of light. Do not overlight.
- Turn the light off when not in use
- direct lighting downward. If this is not possible, provide shielding to limit stray light
- installing full cutoff lighting fixtures on permanent structures to limit glare, light trespass and sky glow
- consider using low-pressure sodium lamps to minimize the color spectrum of the light that is emitted
